Workshop on Puppetry

 

Venue: Salwan Montessori School, Gurgaon, Sector 5
Days and Time: 18 May, 2015 to 22 May, 2015 – 12:00pm to 2: 30pm

A five days puppetry workshop was organized SMS, Gurgaon conducted by Mr. Anand Kumar, a professional puppeteer. The resource person discussed the importance of puppetry in early childhood education and how teachers can be more creative and innovative to make the puppets more real and lively. He also discussed about types of puppets, such as String puppets, Rod puppets, Glove puppets and Shadow puppets. It was followed by writing of a script, making of different puppets and enactment with puppets on stage. Importance of puppet breathing, manipulation of glove, shadow, rod, string etc. Were also discussed. The aim of the workshop was to introduce puppetry as an aid to education. A special session on creative speech, voice modulation, dialogue delivery was also organized to enhance teacher’s communication skills.

The workshop was very interesting and educative as it taught the participants how they could make their teaching more enjoyable for children.

Inter Salwan English Competitions 2015
hosted by Gyan Devi Salwan Public School

 

Day & Date: Saturday, 16th May’15

 

GDSPS hosted the first Inter Salwan English Competitions 2015 to enable the young learners excel in varied skills and develop competencies.

The Programme commenced with a prayer. The esteemed guests and judges were welcomed and felicitated by Hon’ble Chairperson Ms. Janak Juneja, Hon’ble Director, Training Vertical, AVM A. Javeed AVSM, VSM (Retd.) and Hon’ble Director, GDSPS, Shri S.K. Saraswat.

Hon’ble Chairperson Ms. Janak Juneja enlightened the gathering with her words of wisdom wherein she stressed on the importance of participating in competitions. Hon’ble Director, Training Vertical, AVM Javeed apprised all with the initiatives taken by Training Vertical to provide the institutions with the best of learning experiences.
Dj La Bamba, India’s No.3 Turn-Tablist enthralled the audience with some beat juggling. The audience was also mesmerized by the musical extravaganza presented by the professional hip-hop dance choreographer, singer and MC, Rapper Maddy.
The objective of the Let’s Rap competition aimed The competition was targeted at Secondary and Senior Secondary School students from all Salwan Schools. They participated in the competition as a team comprising of 3-4 participants. The participants were given a theme each with 4-5 words to be included on the spot. They were given 30 minutes to write for the given theme, followed by their performance. The lyrics were to be written in English only and the permitted time limit for the performance was 3 minutes. The panel of jury comprised of Mr. Vikram Seam, well known and recognized as one of the India’s top DJs. He is also a proud alumnus of Salwan Public School, Rajendra Nagar, Batch 1992; Mr. Vinod Bakshi, a DJ and specialist in playing Electronic House and Ms. Monica Sardana, Deputy Director, Training Vertical, Salwan Education Trust. The First Position was bagged by the team of Gyan Devi Salwan Public School while the team from Salwan Public School, Gurgaon stood second.

Shakespeare's 'Soliloquy' competition was organized in a venue that was very aesthetically designed keeping in mind the Shakespearean Era. Eight teams from sister schools took part in the said event. Each team consisted of a narrator and a performer who enact a Soliloquy from one of the Shakespeare's Tragedies.  The students from Classes IX to XII presented soliloquies from Shakespeare's tragedies: Macbeth, Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, etc. The panel of judges comprised of Ms. Priyamvada Bhattacharya ( Author and Poetess), Ms. Jyoti Kathpalia (Associate Professor PGDAV College Delhi University) and  Ms. Homi Astawans ( Retired H.M., C.B.S.E. Resource Person ELT Consultant). The First Position was bagged by the team of Gyan Devi Salwan Public School while the team from Salwan Public School, Mayur Vihar stood second.

Students of Classes VI – VIII participated in Dubbomania Competition wherein each team comprised of 5 participants, who enacted on video of clippings from cartoon movies played on the screen. The competition witnessed the portrayal of exceptional theatrical skills. The vibrant costumes brought forth a riot of colours on stage. The multi – talented actors' skills left an everlasting impression in the mind of the audience.  The First Positions were bagged by Salwan Public School (Afternoon) and Salwan Public School (Gurgaon).
It was indeed a platform where the students were introduced to many skills and they were able to attain heights of excellence through their wonderful performances. The aim of the festival was to provide the right forum to display the creative potential of students, was achieved. We believe they will carry forward the learning.

Ms. Preety Sehgal, one of the judges for Dubbomania, Ms. Jyoti Kathpalia, esteemed judge for Soliloquy and Rapper Maddy shared their experiences and provided their feedback. The whole experience was extremely educative, which made the programme a great learning experience for the participants.

 

Valedictory Ceremony

Exuberating, motivating, enlightening and engaging would describe the Inter-Salwan English Competitions.

British Council Library Workshop

A workshop on 'Changing the Role of Linraries' was organised at British Council Library. The objective of the session was to find out innovative ways to develop students' reading habits, as libraries are no more places to be silent. The new philosophy of library is to be developed as an information and knowledge centre.

Libraries are no more just about books but also technology, which should be integrated in the library systems i.e. providing internet facility, tabs, computer systems with knowledge games, e-books which will help students have a wider scope of knowledge and information.

The workshop helped the participants understand the changes required to uplift the image of conventional libraries. The concept of new library is to encourage the students to come in and never want to leave. It will also help them to develop multiple-intelligence in terms of creativity, fun and ignite the desire to acquire knowledge in the students.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS

On the occasion of Earth Day, an Inter-House Role Play Competition was organised on the theme "Depleting Resources of the nature / animals on the verge of extinction". The students came up with some extraordinary and innovative ideas to express the concerns for nature and animals like Ozone layer, Chinar tree, tiger, sparrow  and many more brilliant ideas.  The students demonstrated great confidence and skill in their diverse performances.
 Amit Singh of Ambar house won the First position followed by Yogita Mittal of Anal House with second position and third position was bagged by Prattyush Kala of Avni House.
