Venue: Multipurpose Hall, GDSPS
Organised by: Tata Edge, Mr. Andhul
Attended by: Staff Members

A workshop on Teaching Strategies and Collaborative Learning, making use of technology was conducted by Tata Edge. The resource person discussed the role of teachers in promoting collaborative learning.

It was demonstrated through small video clipping and power point presentation that the students are well versed with the use of technology these days. It’s for the teachers to keep them engaged so that they learn through it and don’t get disoriented.

The difference between being engaged with the technology and being entertained by it was also made clear and the emphasis was on being engaged - which is meaningful, solves problem, meant for learning and would yield long term results.

To warm up in the beginning, the teachers who were sitting department-wise were given one chart each and were asked to design a school creative in which they were supposed to design a school logo and write a tag line for the school. The teachers enthusiastically participated in groups and showed their creativity.

This was followed by strategies for collaborative learning in which the following strategies were discussed:

    • QAXP- Question-Answer-Expand-Paraphrase

    • A to Zee

    • Jigsaw

    • Dicto-gloss

    • Number Heads

    • Bingo Card

It was a learning experience for the teachers to be a mentor than merely a teacher. The strategies will be helpful in conducting group activities.

Video Conferencing on the theme ‘Festivals’

The students at GDSPS participated in a Video Conference on 28th October, 2014 with City Montessori School, Lucknow and Mahatma KK Montessori Matriculation Higher School, Madurai, Tamil Nadu on the theme ‘Festivals’. There was some superb sharing of ideas; particularly as this often moved beyond general information into the sharing of those key personal experiences. There were some very good response questions, picking up on what students had heard from their interlocutors, and some very moving reflections too. The VC started off by students sharing their reflections on their own personal memories of festivals. GDSPS students’ answers were particularly impressive – with each student really focusing in on the very personal aspects of their responses. The discussion enabled greater understanding, and will eventually help students to understand the kinds of cultural and faith influences in one another’s lives.
The conference had discussion on a variety of festivals from the students. They tended to cover the way that the festival was practiced in considerable depth, often with some attempt to tell the story behind the practices. In the final element of the VC students shared some really interesting dialogue around the purpose of festivals. There was a fascinating range of reasons why people conduct festivals, from the profoundly spiritual to the profoundly mundane.
The Video Conferencing is a great platform for the students to share their thoughts with their peer group in different parts of the world. It has enhanced the students’ learning on the theme ‘festivals’. The students participated with great enthusiasm, confidence and thoughtfulness.  It was a great learning experience for the students.

AVM A Javeed, AVSM, VSM (Retd), Director-Principal, SET-Training, warmly welcomed the teachers from various schools of Delhi and NCR to the Programme.  He emphasized the fact that introduction and implementation of CCE requires serious thought. CCE strengthens the system of assessment and evaluation and helps in preparing the children for the future.

Session I: Multi-media Kit on CCE by ETMA

Dr. (Mrs) Indu Khetarpal apprised the gathering about the role of a teacher, who is the best judge to assess the ability of a child better than the board. Hence now CBSE has started with the school based examination system in place of traditional board based system. She discussed about the challenges faced by teachers in implementing CCE. She focused on the objective of the IMCC kit i.e., developing deeper understanding of CCE framework among the teachers. The Multimedia kit by ETMA is designed so as to help teachers to assimilate the contents and nuances of CCE. Dr. Khetarpal’s session highlighted the ICT integrated blended learning design– the design developed by ETMA through extensive research; which would help in developing higher order thinking skills in students. The session stressed on the fact that the implementation and success of CCE depends on how well assessment and its data is used to improve classroom teaching. ETMA has developed this Interactive Multimedia Course on CCE (IMCC) that comprises of 10 Self contained, self learning video modules with built in exercises for collaborative learning. The video modules are supported by e-tutorial, a well designed reinforcement reading and a printed training manual. An online test on CCE is also developed that teachers can take at the end of the course and get certified.

Session II: Formative Assessments: Meaning, Features, Tools and Techniques

With the objective of equipping teachers with the necessary skills and expertise to implement Formative Assessment in its true spirit, the session took as its starting point a definition of formative assessment not as specific stage within a cycle of assessment, but as a complex and continuous process of activity, reflection, communication and evaluation taking place between teacher and learners and between learners themselves. The outcomes of such a process then lead to the adaptation and refinement of learning activities with the aim of continuously improving learning - the development of learner autonomy is central to the process. The teachers were provided with the information on how to put formative assessment approaches into practice through hands-on experience on creating rubrics for assessment in their subject groups.

Session III: Summative Assessment: Meaning and Features

Traditionally, we have used assessments to measure how much our students have learned up to a particular point in time. This is called "assessment of learning" - or what we use to see whether our students are meeting standards set by the school or the classroom teacher. These summative assessments are conducted after a unit or certain time period to determine how much learning has taken place.
It is important to set question papers according to the Bloom’s Taxonomy so that it caters to all types of students - Outstanding, average and below average. The objectives of effective questioning are to understand and reflect upon questioning skills and to revisit Bloom’s Taxonomy before and after setting the questions for assessment. A teacher should be clear with the learning objectives and questions should be in sync with the learning objectives. Value based questions must be included in the question paper. Knowing how to ask right questions and providing appropriate answers is the foundation of all the learning.

Session IV: Assessing Co-scholastic Areas

It has been widely understood that classroom transaction in academic subjects alone cannot foster development in a child. All round development of the child is the dynamic trend in the new educational system. The development of qualities such as Self Esteem, Attitudes, Values and Life Skills require development of positive and adaptive behaviours over a period of time.

This session enabled the participants to understand the components of the Co-scholastic areas of CCE, including the grading and assessment scheme. Experiential activities, reflective exercises and discussion enriched our understanding on the seamless integration of different tools and techniques of co-scholastic areas during teaching-learning.

Session V: CBSE Initiatives

The Board has taken various thoughtful initiatives to prepare a comprehensive road map to operationalize and implement the examination reforms of the government in a time bound and effective manner with public interest at focus. The resource person explained about many new changes being introduced by the CBSE. She also told about the various initiatives taken by the CBSE to improve the teaching methodology thereby making teaching - learning process more effective.

The Programme provided clarity to teachers to enable effective implementation of CCE in their routine classroom teaching and learning. The sessions were very enriching with interactive activities which made the programme a great learning experience for the participants. The whole experience was very enlightening and extremely educative.
