REPORT On POISONOUS SUBSTANCE LEAD IN PAINTS

Date – 23rd December, 2014
Venue: GD Salwan Public School
Organized by : Toxics Link, NGO
Attended by: Students of class IX and teachers

Ms. Prachi from Toxics link talked about Poisonous substance present in and around our homes. At homes lead is found in household decorative paints, lead painted toy, lead and water, lead soldered cans, Airborne lead etc.
The exposure to lead can cause various health problems in children like delayed mental and physical development, learning deficiencies, lower IQ, behavioral problems, Kidney damage etc. Children below the age of 6 are particularly susceptible and get the lead by eating or chewing paint, licking the paint from toys, walls, doors etc. The studies have told that the bright coloured paints tend to have more lead than white. Lead is being used in the paints as they give bright colour and are corrosion resistant.

How can this be prevented?

  1. While buying paint we should read the product information carefully?
  2. Avoid dark painted toys, cheap jewelry etc.
  3. Avoid exposure of dust while painting.
  4. Uniform logo and labeling by government.

She also told teachers and students to fill in petition, so that we all can voice are opinion to the government for taking strict action against lead in paints.
