Topic: Humanity is on The March, Earth Itself Is Left Behind

To mark the Earth Day celebrations, Inter-House Debate competition was held on 30th April 2015. The basic aim of the competition was to ignite the thought provoking issue of technology taking toll over humanity. Debaters from all the five houses participated enthusiastically and brought forward wonderful points.

Inter House On The Spot Painting Competition
Topic: Save Mother Earth

An Inter House ‘On the Spot Painting Competition’ was held for primary classes. The theme for the same was ‘Save Mother Earth’. Participants from all the five houses showed the plight of Mother Earth and exhibited their creativity ithrough varies colours on their sheets.

Inter class ‘Best Out of Waste’ competition 
(ClassesVI-VIII)

An Inter class ‘Best Out of Waste’ competition was organized wherein the students exhibited their creativity by making beautiful artefacts out of waste material. Class VI made the artefacts using waste papers. Waste Material used by Class VII was tetra packs and pet bottles and Class VIII used discarded CDs for making useful products. It was a group activity which exhibited cooperation and coordination in bringing out the best creativity.

The Results are as follows:
1. In Class VI Section A won the first prize for the Decorative Tray.
2. In Class VII Section B won the first prize for the NASA Rocket.
3. In Class VIII Section A won the first prize for the Candle Stand

Workshop on Teaching Mathematics through Origami


TITLE: Teaching Mathematics through Origami, Training workshop Series 2015

VENUE:Salwan Public School, Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi
ATTENDED BY: Ms. Rekha Goel
Salwan Education Trust, in collaboration with Aravalli Foundation for Education, organized a four day training workshop on teaching mathematics through origami. This was supported by National Council for Science and Technology Communication and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The workshop started with the welcome address by Dr. Indu. Khetarpal, Principal, Salwan Public School. The resource apprised the participants on the International Conference on Origami and use of origami in science and math lab activities. Theorems in a boat for proving Pythagoras theorem were demonstrated. Pie mala was practised by the participants. On second day making of a circle and sixteengon were taught using A4 sheet. On the third day folding a paper into a heptagon ,triangular pyramid and dodecahedron was demonstrated and practised. On the fourth day truncated triangular solid was made by the participants. We also witnessed a small programme organized by Salwan Girls School and SJPS Naraina school. It was an enriching and learning experience.

INTER CLASS GROUP DISCUSSION

An Inter Class Group Discussion was organised  to gauge the knowledge of  students regarding air pollution that is affecting the health of the citizens of Delhi. The group discussion helped the young students to enhance their knowledge regarding the pollution affecting the health of people and the various measures taken to prevent it.The students expressed with zeal, confidence and proper voice modulation. The pabnel of judges comprised Ms Alpana Khandare, a Writer and Ms Jaswinder Kaur, Coordinator GDSMS.
The First prize was bagged by the team from Class IV A - Saksham Arora and Sara Aggarwal and the Second Position was secured by the team from Class V A - Pratyush Kala and Hamda Fatima.

INTER CLASS POEM RECITATION COMPETITION

An Inter-class Poem Recitation Competition was conducted for classes I-III on 30 April 2015. The students displayed extraordinary performance and coordination in reciting meaningful poems based on the theme "Clean Delhi, Green Delhi". Classes I A and I B shared the First prize and the second prize was bagged by class III B.


The activity helped in making the students aware of the issues concerning their city and the precautions which should be adopted to make our city green and clean.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS

The school celebrated Earth Day with a host of activities. An Inter-House Role Play Competition was organised on the theme "Depleting Resources of the nature / Animals on the verge of extinction". The students came up with some extraordinary and innovative ideas to express their concerns for nature and animals like Ozone layer, Chinar tree, tiger, sparrow and many more brilliant ideas. The students demonstrated great confidence and skill in their diverse performances.


Amit Singh of Ambar house won the First position followed by Yogita Mittal of Anal House with second position and third position was bagged by Prattyush Kala of Avni House.

TERI – SEARCH Workshop

Topic: Launch ceremony Phase VII of Project SEARCH

 

Students of Classes IX and VIII attended the Launch Ceremony Phase VII of Project SEARCH. Ms. Ranjana Saikia , Director Educating youth for sustainable development enlightened the audience  about the successful partnership between TERI and Tetra Pak , so as to educate students towards one goal i.e. Caring for environment. She informed that the 7th phase of programme is looking for more action and shift will be towards digitization.

 

A documentary was shown on Environment which explained the impact of Project SEARCH on the society.
Dance- drama was performed by the 4 finalists in this category based on theme “Girl Child”.


Other speakers from TERI , Ms. Supriya gulati , Ms. Supriya Singh also spoke out about the programs conducted in the year 2014-15. They emphasized on more collection of recyclable waste in the present year, on promotion of  Teacher leadership and handing outs of Resource kits for schools to encourage more number of participants from their schools.

 

Mr. Mitrasen Bhikajee , Senior Programme specialist –Natural Sciences, UNESCO apprised the gathering  that instead of Sun’s energy entering our planet , nothing else is entering or leaving our Earth. So whatever trash we are producing , we have to recycle it here and also reduce the amount produced ,if we want life to continue on this planet.

Qualifying test for SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMME for TIMES NIE MEMBERS


Gyan Devi Salwan Public hosted the entrance test for the SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMME for TIMES NIE MEMBERS on  21 April, 2015 . TIMES OF INDIA is constantly striving to encourage children to learn more in their pursuit of excellence. In tandem with this pursuit,  one of the initiatives undertaken by the TOI is SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMME for TIMES NIE members, whereby successful candidates of the qualifying test shall be provided training in professional journalism under the tutelage of a leading journalist team. Students in huge numbers from across the city and NCR appeared for the entrance test. Following the one-hour test, students left the school with the hopes of selection for the prestigious SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAMME.

STUDENTS' MEET ON PLANNING COLLEGE ADMISSIONS

A students' meet on planning college admissions was hosted by Gyan Devi Salwan Public School, organised by Centre for Career Development. The objective was to help students and parents understand the institutes, courses and unique offerings to help students understand the career planning process and  and also help them understand  various career options & competitions. The issue related to career planning and how to plan college admissions were also taken as a topic of discussion by the speaker, Mr. Jitin Chawla. The representatives from Pearl Academy and AFA (Academy of Fashion and Art) also participated in the session to make the students and parents aware of various options available like: Interior, fashion , business, makeup, textile, styling etc. Parents and students from the schools of vicinity, along with the students of the host school attended the session. It was overall a successful event.

ANNUAL DAY – SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

 


 

To mark the historic moment when Gyan Devi Salwan Public School accomplished a milestone by completing 25 years of excellence in education and service to humanity, the school held its Annual Day on 12 April 2015 with grandeur.The Chief Guest for the evening was Hon’ble Justice Sh. Rajiv Sahai Endlaw, Judge, Delhi High Court and Sh. B.L.Khurana , esteemed Trustee, Salwan Education Trust as the Guest of Honour. The event also had the esteemed presence of Ms. Maneka Sahai Endlaw, a philanthropist. Other eminent personalities present at the event included, Shri Sushil Dutt Salwan, Chairman, Salwan Education Trust, Hon’ble Chairperson GDSPS, Ms. Janak Juneja , esteemed members of the Salwan Education Trust and the members of the Managing Committee, Directors and Principals of the scvhools under the aegis of SET.


The evening unraveled  with the traditional lighting of the lamp. Hon’ble Justice Sh. Rajiv Sahai Endlaw released the school magazine and the Silver Jubilee momento. The highlight of the evening was Rajat Jhankar ,a cultural fiesta, exhibiting various colours of Indian dances. Exuberant performances of  Kathak and Bharatnatyam jugalbandi, Bamboo and Bihu dance of  Assam , Garba and Bhangra ,  Dandiya, Chhau dance of Orissa, Kalbelia  of Rajasthan  and Goan dance, truly exemplified  the characteristics of great dancers – elegance poise , strength and agility. The dance concert  was , to say the least, an amalgamation of grace, vigour, vitality and a lot of energy.


In his inspiring address to the  gathering, Hon’ble Justice Sh. Rajiv Sahai Endlaw applauded the noble cause of education and service to humanity undertaken and carried out with such great dedication and vigour by Salwan schools. The grand function concluded with the release of 500 balloons  signifying the countless  stars of GDSPS that imbibe the great learning from here and reach the heights of success. The splendid view was breathtaking .The event concluded with the rendition of the National Anthem.

Interactive Session with Major H.P.S. Ahluwalia - Silver Jubilee Celebrations

 

As part of Silve Jubilee Celebrations, Gyan Devi Salwan Public School organised an Interactive Session with Major H. P. S. Ahluwalia, Founder and Chairman of Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, on 11th April 2015. The event was graced with the presence of Shri Shiv  Dutt Salwan, Chairman Emeritus, Salwan Education Trust ,Shri. Harpal Singh, Mentor and Chairman Emeritus, Fortis Healthcare Limited and Trustee, Salwan Education Trust, Ms.Janak Juneja, Chairperson, Gyan Devi Salwan Public School along with the Principals and other dignitories from other Salwan Schools.

The programme commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp followed by the felicitations. The school had also organized an “Awareness Walk” in the neighbourhood area. A contingent of students was flagged off  by the Chief Guest, Major H. P. S. Ahluwalia. The students with banners displaying road safety issue concerns drew attention of the public. A hundred feet high balloon with the motto of the school ‘Service Before Self‘ was launched by Hon'ble Chairman Emeritus, SET, Shri Shiv Dutt Salwan,  signifying the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of  the school .


Major H.P.S Ahluwalia shared his vast experiences in the Interactive Session with the students. He narrated his experiences of the various expeditions and the obstacles he had to overcome. He laid stress on the power of prayer and encouraged the students to believe in themselves and never give up in life. The programme culminated with an Art Exhibition, which displayed the paintings, sculptures and other artifacts of international art forms. The guests applauded the efforts of the students and praised the innovative ideas and aesthetic sense of the students.

Interaction with a Scientist

ATTENDED BY: Students of the classes IX-XII

With a view to encourage, popularize and inculcate scientific temper among the students and to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Gyan Devi Salwan Public school, a talk by eminent scientist Shri M.S Arora, Former Head – Systems and Experiment Division, Space Application Centre, ISRO, was organised followed by an interactive session with the students.
He gave his presentation on Satellite communications and Mars Orbiter Mission. He briefed the students about INSAT satellites, Remote sensing satellites, SLV, ASLV, PSLV, GSLV etc. He also discussed the Mars orbiter mission and its importance in the near future.
The different satellites that were launched - Chandrayan-1, Chandrayan-2, Student satellites, Geosynchronous satellites, GAGAN  etc. were also discussed briefly by him.
After the presentation, he had an interactive session with the students wherein the students put up their queries, which were very patiently answered by the eminent speaker. 
The entire session was extremely enriching and great learning experiences for the students.

April Activities (KG)

Earth Day

Earth Day has become one of the most widely celebrated environmental events across the globe. Earth Day is all about appreciating the uniqueness of our planet Earth with its incredible biodiversity. The students of Gyan Devi Salwan Public School celebrated Earth Day on 22 April, 2015 by depicted their concern for Earth through art. The importance of this day was explained to the children and also the ways by which we can keep our environment clean were discussed.

 

 

 

Cleanliness Drive
Cleanliness is next to godliness
The activity was conducted in order to make students recognize the importance of maintaining a clean  school, a clean city and a clean country, Cleanliness Drive was organized on 29 April, 2015 in the school. The students took a pledge to keep their school, homes, and surroundings clean. Students were given handy tips to keep their surroundings and school clean.  It also made the students aware of the dignity of labour.

 

 



Show and Tell Activity 
Show and Tell activity helps the students to organize information and builds their confidence. The activity also provides opportunities for both fun and learning. The Show and Tell activity for the month was conducted on 29 April, 2015 wherein the students prepared a few lines on the topic – ‘My Family’. A family is a source of love and security for a young child. Children enjoyed talking about their families, shared stories, feeling happy to be part of a family.

 

 

 

PEC Activity
The Physical Education Cards are used to provide interesting experiences to students and facilitate the process of engaging with them intensively in games and activities that are focused particularly on agility, balance, coordination, speed and strength. These games are also integrated in teaching new concepts of other subjects in more interesting and innovative ways. PEC Activity for the month: Walking on toes and heels on a triangular and square pathway was used to make the students aware of different parts of the foot involved in walking (toes, heels) and different shapes (triangle, square). They also learnt to follow simple instructions given by the teacher: e.g., walk straight, change direction, walk slowly/ quickly, etc.
